As a busy working mum, it is important for me to have quality time together at mealtimes. We don’t eat dinner together every night, so on the days I am home earlier from work or have time off, I make a tasty meal we can all enjoy together. My middle child loves to cook and bake and we like to make our favourite dishes from scratch. From meatballs to burgers and lasagne all firm beef favourite in our house. Earlier on this week, we had a go at making Beef Teriyaki and it was a huge hit. We thought we’d share the recipe with you and why we love beef.
I find that lean red meat is versatile, you can make quick simple meals like this that can be made cheaply and are great for your body too. Iron is something I have to make sure is topped up in my diet as well as my middle boy for health reasons and red meat is great for that. It is part of our regular family favourites. We try to eat it several nights a week. Mix it in with some veg and you’ve got it covered. There are many variants you can use, different cuts of meat and so many different ways to make and flavour the lean red meat. You won’t get bored.
Beef is naturally rich in protein, low in salt and provides eight essential vitamins and minerals that support good health and wellbeing. These are: iron, niacin (vitamin B3), vitamins B6 and B12, zinc Riboflavin, potassium and phosphorus.
We are going to show you how you can make this quick and simple family favourite meal within 30 minutes. It is adaptable and the sauce is made from scratch, you’ll whip this up in no time. The recipe below served the 5 of us, but I’d say, 4 adults.
Teriyaki Beef Recipe
Ingredients:-
- 600 grams Sliced lean sirloin steakĀ
- 1 tablespoon of Sesame Oil
- 1 pack of long-stemmed broccoli and any other veg you’d like to add maybe peppers or mange tout
- Spring Onions (optional)
- Chilli’s (optional)
- Sesame Seeds (optional)
- 120 ml of Water
- 2 tablespoons of water
- 60 ml Brown sugar
- 60ml Soya Sauce (we used GF Soya sauce)
- 1 tablespoon Sesame Oil
- 2 tablespoon Corn Flour
- 1 tablespoon Honey
- 2 teaspoons Fresh Ginger (minced)
- 2 teaspoons Fresh Garlic (minced)
- Egg Noodles (rice noodles for GF option) make to packet
Cut up the lean sirloin steak into thin strips.
To make the sauce you want to put the soya sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, honey, water, brown sugar into a bowl and mix.
In a separate small bowl mix the cornflour and 2 tablespoons of water.
Pour the ingredients from the first bowl into a small saucepan. Heat and stir until the sugar is all dissolved. Bring to the boil and then add the cornflour mixture.
Keep stirring for another 2 minutes and the sauce will start to thicken. Take off the heat for later. If you are in a hurry you can make the sauce in advance and store in the fridge until ready to use.
Cook the vegetables. I used long-stemmed broccoli which I put in the microwave with water and covered for 4 minutes. The still had a bite to them. Put them to the side for now. There are many different vegs you could add here from peppers, onions, asparagus, whatever you like.
Boil water for your noodles. Make them as per the pack instructions and once ready, drain off the excess liquid. Take off the heat until you are ready with your steak. Rice can be used instead of noodles if you’d prefer that.
I made two lots of noodles as I was making egg noodles and gluten-free rice noodles.
Put 2 tablespoons of sesame oil in the wok and heat. Place the sliced steak into the pan. Cook for 3 minutes each side. If you have a lot of steak or a smaller pan you might want to do it in two batches. It helps to have your pan quite hot so you can sear the meat and not make it too chewy.
Add your noodles, vegetables and sauce to your wok. Stir all together and heat for 2 minutes.
Slice some garnish. I used some chilli’s for the adult dishes and sliced spring onion for both. Plate up and add some sesame seeds, chillies and spring onions to garnish. The latter is optional, but I do think the sesame seeds add extra flavour and texture to the dish.
What do you think? Would you give it a go? It was easy to make and all the kids loved it. I think the fact the sauce isn’t too spicy and has a slightly sweet taste makes it a favourite with kids. Having three children it is important to get something they all like and something quick, healthy and tasty. This Beef Teriyaki covers them all. It is also a firm family favourite go-to meal as it is pretty much gluten-free and we just need to substitute the noodles. This got such a big thumbs up in our house, we made it twice in one week. Delicious.
