When I finished with last week’s weekly post We were still in Scotland. We were getting packed, getting money changed and getting excited about our holiday. The kids have been off school and the weather has been amazing.
I was working long days Monday and Tuesday, the kids had fun with their grandparents who are going to miss them when we are away. I came home one evening to see Aria lying back watching the sky. The life they love over the summer. The boys have been loving staying out until late playing football. It doesn’t get dark until 11:30pm so it’s great. I caught up on work and got everything done for going away. I’m on way of these people that needs to tick everything off my to do list, tidy up and take everything I might ever need with me on holiday. Even though we are going to the US and can buy anything we might need. Setting our alarms for 4am Wednesday morning was a bit of a shock to the system.
It was light getting up at 4am and the taxi picked us up at 4:30am. Off we went for the first leg off our journey to Glasgow airport. We flew to London. Then, onways to LAX. That was an 11 hour flight. The kids haven’t really been abroad other than France since the boys were babies so they don’t remember. The flight was great, long, but the kids were great. I had Tyler and Aria, Robert and Lucas were over the other side. We watched films, games and ate food. We looked out the window at the most amazing sights and orher than 20 minutes they were awake the whole time. I watched The Notebook and what a mistake that was, tears, sobbing and snivelling my way through the next hour. Great film, but boy that tugged on those heartstrings.
By the time we landed in LA we’d been up 22 hours and the kids were going strong. We got our car and headed to my Aunt and Uncle’s place in California. It was so good to see them. I miss them a lot. The kids loved it and we stayed up relatively late to get our body clocks adjusted a little. Tyler, Aria and I went out with my Uncle Robert to watch the 4th of July fireworks. They were amazing.
Next day, we headed to see the Hollywood sign. What an incredible sight that it. The heat was warm, but not unbearable. I think our heat back home helped. You don’t get too close to the sign, but it’s a must see sight and feels quite emotional.
We did some supermarket shopping before heading back home. The food is all part of the American experience isn’t it?
Friday was a million degrees, well it felt that way. Is was 49 degrees celsius. We did some shopping and the pool in the evening.
Today, Saturday, we are heading to San Diego zoo and Disneyland California adventure park tomorrow. Don’t worry, I’ll do a bigger post when I get home. I just wanted to do my usual diary style post.
How are things back home? We are having he best time, I feel a bit like I’m writing a postcard, remember those?
Have a great weekend and week.
How exciting, have a wonderful time across the pond.
So you went to California to escape the British heat, yes? How very exciting! Hope you have a marvellous time. I simply couldn’t countenance spending so long travelling with young kids. Have a great time and enjoy your break Susan. #mysundayphoto
Have an amazing time, I would love to go back to LA xx
How wonderful to have family over there, I bet that makes your visit even more special. I’m sure you’ll have the best time ever and I’m so looking forward to hearing all about it. I love the photo of Aria relaxing in the sun x
Postcards: I remember the first thing we ever did when on a family holiday was to write our postcards back home. Then we’d post them and still arrive home before them! I guess the post is a little quicker these days, but that makes me sound really ancient, lol.

Hi Susan, I love that you actually took that photo of the Hollywood sign. It’s so iconic but were actually there looking at it!… We are back up to the mid 30sC, which is plenty hot enough, if we reached 49C on a regular basis it would be air conditioning all round!…. The food has to be part of the American experience, there is so much I would like to try (are corn dogs really that nice? Does a real American cheesecake taste anything like the recipe? And are Fish crackers made of fish?)… It’s a shame that postcards are no longer part of the holiday experience. Writing them and seeing how long they took to get where they were going was part of the fun.
Have a great time and make loads of memories.
xx
You see the sign in so many photos and films etc and to actually see it in real life must be amazing. Have a great time.

The Notebook always makes me cry – I sometimes have to stop watching it once they’re in that last hospital scene. Hope you’re having a brilliant time. LA just looks magical (in a Hollywood way I mean :))

I have never watched the Notebook but if I do I will make sure I’m on my own as I am awful for crying at things. It is amazing that your kids all stayed awake for that length of time, I guess it was all the excitement. How exciting to see the Hollywood sign, it must have felt a little surreal
