We love playing board games as a family, we have joined the blogger board game club, so we can play and share some new board games with you. This month’s one is Timeline British History. There are several Timeline games available which all work in a similar way, from music, science and much more. You have to place your cards in the correct chronological order. If you are incorrect you have to pick up a new card and try again. The person to win is the player to get rid of all their cards. This one is based on history, British history.
Inside the box, you will find an instruction booklet and two sets of cards. The box is a beautiful embossed tin. It looks great and a lovely collectors game. There are a total of 110 timeline cards in the set, split into two piles, one for more current history and one far into the past.
The cards are doubled sided, they have the same picture and information on both sides, however, one side contains the actual year of the moment featured. This is the side that should be face down. These ones are the older history ones.
The game is played by giving each player 4 cards. The cards should be placed date side down. The rest of the timeline cards are placed in the middle. The first card played in the middle the first player should decide to put their card before or after it. Once placed and happy with their decision, they turn the cards over to check if they were right. Being right means it stays where it is and the next person takes their turn. If it turns out to be the wrong order, they discard it to the bottom of the pile and take another card adding it to the cards they have in front of them. This carries on until the winner gets all their cards out.
The Timeline British History game includes British history as recent as 2016, so even the younger kids can join in. The game is recommended for ages 8 and over, for 2 to 8 players. You can help guess the rough timeline from the clothing, machinery or items in the picture. How do you think you would do? I think everyone, even a great historian could learn a thing or two.
I think that it is quite a difficult game to play, in that not a lot of people will know the dates, especially kids, but it is a fantastic way to learn. I had a great time discussing the cards and learning about various moments in history with the kids. We had a great discussion about it and the artwork is beautiful, they look like paintings. A game that engages discussion and enhances learning is a great game in my book. It also comes in a lovely little tin. A great little family game and learning tool.

Timeline is such a great game, we are keen on this one. It’s a brilliant way to learn history without even trying – and loads of fun!
It is fun. I could bring it down to Manchester if you want to borrow? x
I really like the sound of this game and my historical knowledge could definitely do with some help. I found history really boring at school!
