The Amazing Things Toddlers Say

21st March 2016 By Susan Mann 57 Comments

At that start of the year I promised I’d do more of one of my favourite types of posts, which is The Funny Things My Kids Say, but my headaches have stuck me down. Not allowing me to do what I’d like the past few months. I’m trying to claw my way back and avoiding eating spider webs so far, a medieval cure for headaches, another post for another time. I am always taking notes of the funny things that my kids say, but this time I thought I’d do The Amazing Things Toddlers Say. Everything is amazing to a toddler, from the grass under their feet, to bubbles flying away, to a stick on the ground. All the things we take for granted, a toddler sees as WOW! They love the simplest of things to play with, cardboard boxes and packaging is just loved and played with as the expensive dog that barks you bought them. So, how about we look at things from a toddlers eyes, well my little toddler.

Toddlers in Cardboard

Aria is a spirited little character, she’s feisty and stubborn, but also sweet and very understanding. She’s loud, but super shy. I learn more about her everyday and love watching the little girl she is becoming. Just this evening I heard so many wonderful things that made me smile tumble out her mouth. Here a are few:-

“Mummy, mummy, look a moon up there” “I like moons” – The simple things.

“Look at stick.” “Mum I found a magic wand.” – I love how sticks become anything they want them to be.

Then stickman takes over “I’m not a pooh stick, I’m Stickman and I’m running about.”

“Look mummy the baby fish are so big now. They are like me. I’m so big today, but tomorrow I’ll be littler again.” – Who knows where their logic lies.

“Mummy, Stickman is dry. Can he come and live with us until we take him home to the family tree?” – Of course he can. We need more sticks in our house.

“I’m so busy.” With What? “Running.” – Ok then, what can’t argue with that.

“Mummy, is your head still sore?” Yes it is sweetie. “Don’t worry, I’ll magic you a new one. Ahhh wishin poof!(Amazon tv show) I’ll give you a Frozen head. But, I might be scared of a Frozen head.” Why Sweetie, you like Frozen. “It’s not a mummy head.” – Aww bless.

We were reading Monkey Puzzle – “I’ve found my mummy and she’s never going to work again.” Ahh got to love the end of the day working mummy guilt trip.

Some of my favourite words Aria uses for things are:- Hill is Hillo, a Duvet is a Smoothie and Bunk Beds is Dunk Beds – So cute.

“Mummy look it’s pretty fireworks.” – no sweetie they are stars.

Aria is a big fan of Cinderella – “Cinderella broke her glass slipper. Oh dear, dear Cinderella. Mummy she’s not happy she broke it.” – I imagine she wouldn’t be.

She is a funny little character and it makes my heart swell with pride. Toddlers really full of wonder and are amazed at the world around them. We should try to take note of this and look at the world through their eyes. What do you think?

What funny things have your children said or done recently?

Don’t forget to check out the funny thing she said.

oh they are such gorgeous little sayings – makes me wish I’d written all the things mine had said – one springs to mind that I just loved and that is instead of calling it a microwave my daughter called it the milkywave as that’s where we used to heat up her milk as a toddler – funnily enough it has stayed as the milky wave and she’s 16! Oh and another one was when one of my children had bare feet they used to call it “having toes on” instead of socks on! great read!

The things kids say! They can be so funny because they think everything is amazing and they have no filter. I once worked at a summer camp with 5-year-olds who we’re asking me about my boyfriend. “Is he Superman?” “Is he Batman?” “Does he have the big, bushy eyebrows?” Umm…actually, yes. #abitofeverything

kids say so many funny things. thats what I love about being a mum. You never know what they’ll come out with next. Like when when we took our new baby for hist first check up, the DR asked my daughter “is this your little bother?” and she proudly answered “yeah, he came out of my mum’s bum.” erm….No secrets then. Or yesterday my daughter found a caterpillar. instantly she (yes, everything is a she) had a name. Rosie, obviously. She had a house in my daughters’ crocs with leaves and flowers and was gently rocked to sleep.”I love my insects!” Brilliant post. thanks for sharing.

I feel as if I should have attached web cams to them to never miss a moment. Great post. All of mine found some sticks at the park the other day and insisted on bringing them all home …I’m sure I’ll find them somewhere in the yard …forgotten about. That is so cute and so funny! Kids say the darnedest things don’t they? And their logic is sometimes better than ours. a few months ago my 9 year old said something that made me crack up! He’s at this stage now where he thinks girls have cooties and girls are weird (we are weird, lol), but I am the exception to the rule because I’m mom. Anyway, I don’t remember what I was saying to him but his brow furrowed and he got real serious, then he said, “Mommy, your girl-speak is weird and I don’t understand you!” The words in combination with the serious look on his face just cracked me up because for the first time, it was like he got disappointed that I am a girl. Every time I remember that moment I laugh! Thanks so much for co-hosting #abitofeverything

Oooh, I love these type of posts!! I just love the things toddlers say, from the hilarious to the cute, to the illogically amazing!! Aria does sound like a little character, although I did wince for you over the mum guilt phrase… I’ve had some gems from my eldest toddler, the other day he said ‘mummy, you are the most precious boy in the whole world!’ I’m obvs not a boy, but I’ll take that! Today I overheard him say to my husband ‘daddy, you are my bestest buddy ever…’ Too much! Then he does often say ‘mummy, your bum is massive, big, and wobbly.’ Clearly on those days my self confidence is soaring!! Lovely post, I really enjoyed reading it! And Aria is my favourite girls name-so gorgeous!! (I have 2 boys, I’ll never get to use it!!)

Hi Susan, children do say the cutest things and it’s a good job you know what Aria means when she asks for a Duvet, or it could get quite aerated! And wouldn’t it be nice if children got small again every now and again? Mine wouldn’t be quite so big and ugly then (don’t tell them I said that).

When mine were small I did mean to write down the daft things they said, but never did, although there is still one I remember. One day my son (who wasn’t very old at the time) kept saying there was something spiky in his mouth, being a Mum I dived straight into his mouth with my fingers, after a lot of coughing and spluttering I realized that he meant the food was spicy and not spiky. Which was a bit of a relief I can tell you!

How lovely that Aria wanted to magic you a new head to make your headaches go away but didn’t want you to have a different head from your mummy one. I love her fascination with the moon too.
