A Letter To My Future Self

29th May 2015 By Susan Mann 4 Comments

I have been thinking a lot recently about focusing on the positives rather than the negatives. It’s harder than you think it would be. Now, I’m far from a negative person, but sometimes things get on top of you whether it’s work, commitments, chores or even dealing with the children. Wallowing in the negative is doing no-one any good. We really need to take some advice from Taylor Swift and Shake it off, Shake it off!

I thought that writing a letter to myself might be a good way to do this.  I found a site that explained how to write a letter to your future self and the benefits of it. It explains that I should do this by using actual paper and pens. Something I rarely use these days, but thought what the hell, I’m giving this a go. I got out my writing paper and a lovely green pen I like to write with.

It has been noted that people who write meaningful letters of gratitude, can have increased wellbeing. Worth a try, right?

I have to write down what my life is like now, what I hope will happen in the future and any advice I want to give my future self. To begin with I plan on doing a letter for say my two month future self, rather than a few years or a ten year future self. Baby steps and all.

My letter isn’t the best, but it’s a start. This is something I’d like to keep up. I mention about focusing on the positives, trying not to get bogged down by everything and I can’t do it all. My children are my priority, but I also work full time hours, blog, visit an old guy I help with, run the house, etc. You all know what it’s like it’s hard to keep up with it all. I want to spend more time with the children, making memories and doing thing we love. Spending quality time with my husband, this is important, but I’d also like to spend some more time writing my novel, as well as keeping up with everything else. I’m not sure how positive I sound in this letter. I need to get more organised and this is my plan. I can do this. Can’t I?

Something I want to do and not shelf is to write my novel, it has to come second to my family, but I still want to do it. I am going to give this a go and try to follow my dreams. We have to have dreams don’t we?

Let’s see where I am in a few months’ time. I’d like to write one for years from now future self, but for now I’m interested to see how this goes. What would you write in a letter to your future self? Not years from now, but a few months future self. I’d love to know what you’d write.

You are a very positive person and I’m amazed you find time to work on the novel at all.

Stupidly this post made me well up, purely because I’m too scared to write a letter to my future self because I just don’t believe anything will change or get any better.

Everything is possible. I love these future-self letters because they can show us how easily our reality changes. I’m reminded of a quote from Dumbledore in one of the Harry Potter films “Of course it’s all in your head Harry, that doesn’t mean it’s not real”

Beautiful thought provoking posts, I think your letter is great.
I hope this makes you feel some sense of release, you are amazing and should definetly make time to write your novel xx
