There are many forms of DIY; some entail ambitious construction projects whereas others are smaller and more manageable. You should only embark on a DIY scheme if you are confident in your ability to finish the job to a suitably high standard.
Keeping warm
The Underfloor Heating Store is the perfect place to go if you are in the process of laying new flooring in your home and decide that fitting heating under your floors will benefit you and your family. Getting rid of radiators can free up space, especially if you don’t have much room. Most people can carry out the process, but a qualified electrician should be used to connect the thermostat and heating system.
Painting a tired home
A home can soon look tired and run down, but it’s surprising how a simple coat of paint can brighten up the interior or exterior. An article in The Guardian says that if you work on the basis that your materials will cost you approximately £10 a square metre, including filler, paint and any other necessities, you won’t go wrong. Buying cheaper paint doesn’t always cover the area in one coat so doesn’t always save you money.
Home security
When you leave your home it’s important that you feel confident your property is safe from burglars and fires. Which magazine online has some basic tips on how to help keep your home safe. A good way to start is to fit secure window locks and smoke detectors. There are many different alarm systems available that will send a signal directly to a mobile phone app should an intruder attempt entry. This will then allow you to take the appropriate action.
Small jobs are important
As the winter turns to spring and the weather starts to get warmer you should think about carrying out the basic DIY jobs around the home. You can start by clearing leaves from drains and gutters or repaint the shed to protect it from the elements. Check the pointing on your walls and chimneys, though only attempt these jobs if you’re confident you know what you’re doing. Some of these jobs may seem trivial but you’ll be glad you’ve carried them out later in the year. If you’re handy with wood and a saw, see if you can de-clutter your living space by constructing some shelves.
Preparing your garden
Making your garden an exciting place to spend time doesn’t have to be a complicated job. You can start by looking at the Gardeners World website for ideas, from building your own brick barbeque to starting your own herb garden, which will make your garden a more inviting environment during the hot summer months.
Putting up a garden shed is another DIY job that many people undertake. This saves you storing all of those cumbersome lawn mowers and gardening tools indoors and is not as complicated as it looks. Most DIY jobs can be carried out with some simple tools and a bit of planning. Once you’ve completed your first job you’ll soon move onto the next and before you realise it you’ll have revamped your whole house and garden.
