We’ve been back to school for quite a few weeks now and Tyler is reluctantly getting on with his homework. He thinks once he’s done school, he’s done with work. Which is fair enough, but it’s good to see what they are doing at school and encouraging the learning to continue at home. One thing I am keen to nurture with my children is a love of reading. Encouraging children to read can be challenging at time. It’s good to pick a book out together and something at their level and interested in. Also a great way to get them wanting to read something is for them to have their very own bookmark. We made our own bookmark together, Tyler loved this craft and couldn’t wait to try it out.
I love to read and couldn’t imagine a world without books. My husband isn’t as keen a reader and I would like my children to love to read too. For now they do, but it’s all about keeping them interested. We find the local library is great for this. They have all sorts of clubs and groups on, that shows them reading is enjoyable as a group too. What are your top tips:-
First of all I got out all the materials needed. Some card, pens or pencils, a photograph, Scotch Magic Tape and scissors. There are optional items like ribbon, glitter and anything else you’d like to use to decorate.
Tyler then cut out his shape for the bookmark. We used the standard rectangle shape, but you could use any shape you like.
Next we stuck on the photograph to personalise the Bookmark. We used Scotch Magic Tape with it’s easy dispenser to allow Tyler to stick it down and keep it secure. No more messing around with fiddly bits of tape, ripping and sticking to the wrong thing. It’s simple and easy to use.
We then started on the fun bit of decorating. Tyler wanted his name on it, so his brother wouldn’t take it and he added on little pictures using crayons. We didn’t add glitter on this occasion, but we did add a lovely pink ribbon to the top. I used a single hole punch to punch a hole in the top and thread the ribbon through to tie.
You can carry on decorating it, to your heart is content. We finished Tyler’s here as he was happy with it and wanted to use it with his school homework book. Time to try it out.
It works perfectly as you can see. Not my choice of book, but it’s funny. This is his school homework book for this week. He shares it with his reading partner. It’s good to encourage them to read to their peers.
As you can see so far it’s working. He loves the bookmark and using it. As long as he is reading and more importantly enjoying it, that makes me happy.
These also make great gifts, perfect for Aunties, Uncles or Grandparents. Plus there are so many variations they can try. I’d love to know if you give this a go? Come back and let me know? Or if you have any tips for sharing to encourage young readers?
If you are looking for more crafts using Scotch Magic Tape, they have some great ones over on their Facebook Page.
