Planning A Theatre Trip To London With Kids

13th August 2014 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

I love going to the theatre, it’s one of my favourite things to do. I recently saw Wicked in Glasgow, which was excellent, but it was nothing compared to the excitement of seeing it in the West End. I remember heading down to London with my husband for the first time and we took in a show, which was Wicked and it was a wonderful memorable night. I would love to take the kids to London. There is so much to do and see and we would have to take in a show.
Living in Glasgow we would have to go by train, this would have to be booked in advance, and hopefully save us some money, but think of the fun we could have travelling down. Then I’d book a hotel and theatre tickets through somewhere like Hotel Direct. When they are booked together you seem to get some really good deals.

Now to decide what to see. I think they would love something like The Lion King. I am a huge Disney fan and have never seen this. I’ve never even seen the film, can you believe it? In fact I must fix that. I think this is one show that will keep the young and old entertained. Beautiful music and fab characters.

Or perhaps Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. My oldest Lucas loves the book and both the films. I think he actually likes the original better than the Johnny Depp one. Who doesn’t love Roald Dahl? This I think may be our theatre show of choice. Some Umpa Lumpa’s and chocolate, what’s not to love? I’ve never seen it at the theatre, but growing up loving the film and having a huge admiration for Roald Dahl I think this would be excellent on stage. Have you seen it?

Going to London is expensive at the best of times and kids want lots of snacks, being at the theatre snacks are an added expense aren’t they? I plan to take a couple of goody bags for each of the boys with a drink, some sweet probably some homemade popcorn and a chocolate bar. You couldn’t watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory without chocolate can you. I’d have a look on Pinterest and get some ideas on personalising and making the goody bag a theme. It makes it a bit more fun.
I would take the boys on one of those open bus tours as I think they are a great way to see the city. You see far more than if you were walking, plus you can see where you’d like to visit. However, after going on Duck tours when we were down in London, this would definitely be my choice. I think they boys would love it and I can’t wait to hear them quack at other Duck tours passing us and screaming when they bus drives into the River Thames. We had a great tour guide and lots of fond memories I’d love to share with my children. Now all we need to do is pick a date and we are all set. Anything I’ve forgotten? Have you taken your kids on a theatre break?
