Forget Daddy Cool – Grandparents Are the Coolest

10th August 2014 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

Think back to your childhood. How many memories do you have of your grandparents? For many people, their grandparents were some of the most influential people in their lives. There appears to be a strong bond between grandparents and grandchildren. It’s one that has existed for centuries and a lot of studies have been carried out to determine why the relationship is so unique. It appears the relationship is just as beneficial to the grandparents as it is to the grandchildren. These days’ grandparents do a lot of cool things such as playing on sites such as Online Casino Blue Book. There’s certainly no denying that they can be pretty cool!

The benefits of a strong grandparent/grandchild relationship
There are many benefits that come from the grandparent/grandchild relationship. Often grandparents have an indirect positive effect on their grandchildren due to the support they provide to the parents. They are often seen as caregivers. If there are disruptions within the family unit, grandparents are often there to pick up the pieces and provide emotional as well as practical support. This benefits the grandchildren as they grow up in a loving, supportive environment.
Grandchildren also benefit their grandparents. The first grandchild is always special to a. For this reason the grandparent tends to spoil them and spend quality time with them creating long lasting memories. Having a grandchild around often provides grandparents with a new sense of life. The youthful energy around them creates a more positive atmosphere. They can be a source of comfort to the grandparent too.
A good point raised by Parent Giving, is that grandparents don’t have to take part in day by day parenting. Therefore the time that they do spend with their grandchildren is special. They can focus purely on sharing special memories. Grandchildren love hearing about the ‘olden days’ and grandparents often like sharing their stories about the world. So it tends to be a win-win scenario.
Grandparents also want to share their legacy. Their grandchildren are carrying on the family lines. Therefore they want to share knowledge and ensure that their legacy lives on.
Could grandparents lower infant and child mortality rates?
It may sound far-fetched, but according to Psychological Science, grandparents could have the potential to lower infant and child mortality rates. There isn’t a lot of information out there on the effect grandparents have on their grandchildren in western society. However, the research taken from traditional human societies showed that having a grandparent present during the high risk time period does increase the chances of survival. So the grandparent/grandchild relationship might be more important than you actually realise!
Overall the bond between grandparent and grandchild is special and extremely important. Parents benefit too as the grandparents will often babysit, meaning the grandchild doesn’t have to be left with a stranger. This also helps the parents out financially as child care can be expensive. Allowing your children to have a great relationship with their grandparents will help their development and improve your life too.
