On Monday evening Lucas came to me to tell me his tooth was hurting. I’d taken him to the dentist last Friday for the second time as I was concerned that he’d grown too adult teeth in without his baby teeth coming out. They were almost fully in and sitting considerably far back. They are the bottom front two. The dentist says she wouldn’t take them out and to keep wobbling them. Off he went.
Lucas is a very active boy playing football constantly and recently taking up tennis. Even playing sport and being hit in the face, etc hadn’t shifted these teeth. Lucas was the only one in his class who had yet to lose a tooth. Most of his friends had lost 5 or more. He is 7 1/2 and in Primary 4. So even the kids two or even three years below had lost teeth. Even his little brother lost a tooth at 3 because he fell and banged it out, you can read all about that accident.
Finally on Monday evening, we wobbled his tooth and I managed to get it to come out. It was hanging on so I helped it a little as it was hurting him. I even shed a little tear. He was delighted. I know it’s great to hold onto baby teeth for as long as possible, but for him and us this was a big moment.
He put his tooth in a little purple bag under his pillow and fell asleep a happy boy, dreaming of the tooth fairy arriving.
That evening the tooth fairy arrived, and with her she brought a coin to replace the tooth, a colouring page, a letter and a certificate. He was so excited in the morning to see it all. I love making my children’s life magical in these little ways. I wish it would always be that way. Just a few simple things, make all the difference.
Here he is showing off his missing tooth, you can see the two in behind it. The only baby tooth is pretty wobbly and I’m sure it won’t be long until it’s out.
What a special moment and one I want to cherish forever. My tired little boy about to dream of the tooth fairy.
Do you have any tooth fairy traditions? I’d love to hear about them.
