Eat For Goals And Kaka’s Brazilian Stew

10th June 2014 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

Eat for Goals
With everyone getting into football fever with the World Cup just days away, what better way to incorporate football with healthy eating. The Eat for Goals app does just that. We have been using this for a few months now and really enjoying it. My boys love football and the love playing games, this incorporates the two, with healthy eating promoted from famous footballers, it’s one way I’ve found of getting my boys to try some new things and get their five a day in at the same time.

Score a Goal
Eat for Goals is an app with more than one goal! It is designed to inspire the player of the app, whether young or old to eat healthier in order to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke. It is created with the World Heart Federation. It is based on the Eat for Goals book. The app opens to a score a goal game. It’s a flick type football of game, simple and easy to use. Although I did find it a little harder than my children did to score a goal. If the play scores a goal they win a look at a yummy recipe by a football hero such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Rachel Yankey and more. If they don’t score they are asked to try again. You can also find out more about the players and their healthy eating tips.
Lucas is a major football fiend and he took ownership of the app and asked if he could make Kaka’s Brazilian Stew. Of course we said. We got the ingredient in and Lucas and I set to work.
Little Chef
Ingredients:-

2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 small onion, chopped
50g chorizo sausage, chopped
75g cooked ham, cut into cubes or slices
1 clove of garlic, chopped
3 medium (approx. 450g) sweet potatoes
peeled and cut into cubes
½ a large red pepper, cut into cubes
(seeds removed)
1 400g tin of chopped peeled tomatoes with juice
½ a small hot green chilli pepper, finely
chopped (seeds removed if a mild stew
is preferred)
1 400g tin of black beans, drained
½ a mango, peeled, stone removed and
cut into cubes
2 tablespoon of fresh coriander, chopped
Pinch of salt
Cooking Brazilian Stew
Preparation:-

Heat the vegetable oil in a medium sized pot over a medium heat. Add the onions and stir-fry them for about 2 minutes or until they are soft. Add the chorizo, ham and garlic and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes. Mix in the sweet potatoes, red pepper, tomatoes with juice and green chilli pepper. Add approx. ½ cup of water (120 ml) and bring all to a boil. When boiling reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a lid and simmer for
about 15 minutes more until the sweet potatoes are tender. Stir the black beans into the pot, and cook uncovered until the beans are heated through. Add some more water (approx. ¼ cup or 60 ml) if the mixture seems too dry or thick. Stir in the mango and fresh coriander. Taste and add salt if required.
Kaka's Brazilian Stew
The stew was delicious. We all loved it, I’d never eaten sweet potato before and it was lovely. We are definitely making this recipe again. We are going to try the bolognese next and have already made Carles Puyol’s pasta with pesto. It was delish.
Lucas loved this app and so did I. It’s simple and easy to use, they can find out information about their favourite football heroes and there are some great recipes. You can print them off from the website, I’ve included links below or you have them handy on the app. The app itself if free so you have nothing to lose and eveything to gain. I think this app is a great way to encourage children to be active and eat healthy and have some fun along the way. This app gets a big thumbs up from me.
  • Steven Gerrard’s Crunchy Cod with Herbs
  • Carles Puyol’s Pasta with Pesto and Grilled Vegetables
  • Cristiano Ronaldo’s Haddock with Lemon & Vegetables
  • David Villa’s Spaghetti Bolognese
  • Frank Lampard’s Spinach with Fruit and Nuts
  • Kaka’s Black Bean Brazilian Stew
  • Lotta Schelin’s Fresh Fruit Salad
  • Paul Pogba’s Spaghetti al’ Arrabiata with Tuna and Vegetables
  • Rachel Yankey’s Power Omelette
  • Samuel Eto’o’s Rice Cubana
  • Yaya Toure’s Turkey and Peanut Soup
You can download the app for iTunes and Android.

Disclaimer:- I was given access to the app prior to it going live, I purchased and paid for all the ingredients myself. I was sent some Eat for Goals dishes, chopping board, apron and hat.
