29th October 2013 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

If there’s one show that is guaranteed to get you into the holiday mood it’s ‘The Nutcracker’. From 4th December 2013 to 16th January 2014, the Royal Opera House will be hosting this famous show performed by The Royal Ballet.

Timings and prices will vary depending upon the dates you choose. Tickets will cost anything from £5 to £110. To get the most out of these prices why not use your cashback credit card to pay for the tickets?
The history of the ballet
The Nutcracker was first choreographed by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa. It premiered in 1892 at the St Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre. The score for the ballet was created by Pyotr llyich Tchaikovsky and it’s this that really helped to re-launch the production years later.
The ballet itself wasn’t actually a hit the first time around. However, the music that Tchaikovsky took from the ballet was popular.
The Nutcracker has been performed by many different ballet companies since the 1960s. It’s particularly well-known for being held around Christmas time and many people go to see this magical show in order to get into the festive spirit.
About the show
So what exactly is the story of The Nutcracker? The first thing you should know is that it’s a two-part performance. In Act I the ballet opens on Christmas Eve; friends and family have gathered together to decorate the Christmas tree. Afterwards a party gets underway to celebrate with presents being swapped.
Then, as the clock strikes 8pm, a figure comes into the room – that is where the magic really begins. Based around the young girl “Clara” the story follows her on a magical adventure after she receives an enchanted present.
Who would benefit from seeing The Nutcracker?
The Nutcracker could actually be a great date idea. If you’re looking to treat a loved one, this is a perfect option. The music in the ballet is from the romantic period and you’re bound to remember the melodies for many years to come.
Absolutely everyone could benefit from seeing this ballet. It’s an upbeat, magical performance that will stay with you for years to come. Take a look at The Royal Opera House website to see the timings and prices for the dates you’re interested in.
To make it more affordable you could use your American Express Credit Card. It would also be worth checking out other ballet productions available in December.
