Featured Post – Bedroom Designs Fit For A Princess

16th October 2013 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

For a child, the bedroom is the centre of the world. It’s often the only place where they get to be alone and let their imaginations loose. For a child who dreams of being a princess, there’s nothing better than coming home to a fairy tale room that perfectly captures that fantasy.
This isn’t as difficult to achieve as parents might expect. It doesn’t require a regal-sized budget. With a bit of time and effort, even the most ordinary room can be turned into a place where dreams come true.

The basics
Everything begins with colour but that colour doesn’t have to be pink. Other pastel shades work just as well so it’s best to take a lead from the child on this. White is often an important component, not least because it makes spaces look bigger and a princess’ room should be grand. Gold and silver are important for trimmings.
Ideally a princess’ room should be carpeted and should have thick rugs to give it that sense of luxury. A mural is a fantastic way to add character to the walls and provide a castle view. To give it more depth, it can be fitted around other objects in the room, for instance by painting a tower around a window with painted shutters that can be thrown open to look out on the world.
Every princess should have a chandelier in her room. It’s worth looking in antique shops for these and embellishing them with strings of glass beads that match the colours of the room. Candle brackets can look fantastic on the walls and can be fitted with electric candles so they’re not a fire risk.
The bed
These days there are some fantastic bespoke princess beds available, including cabin beds that look like castles and beds designed to resemble carriages, wheels and all. For those whose budgets are more restricted, a simple four-poster will do the trick, and is easy enough to make using a standard bed frame. Even light bamboo will do to support the awning. Light fabric is the best choice anyway because layers of chiffon or soft mesh look more pleasingly ethereal than solid fabrics and can be complemented by silk or satin bedcovers. Painting all or part of the bedstead gold can add that regal look.
Other furniture
Older princesses need dressing tables. Rococo style curved dressing tables – appropriately painted – are the best choice, with elaborate three part mirrors atop them. Essential items like wardrobes and drawers can be spruced up with fresh paint and elaborate handles, to bring them in line with the theme. Tall bookcases can be made into towers through the simple addition of plywood or stretched fabric spires on top. Seats can be padded with satin and embellished with velvet cushions.
To add the finishing touch to a room like this, glass or plastic ‘jewels’ can be attached to things like window frames, light switches, bedposts and picture frames, making the whole room glitter. Occasional sequins sewn into curtains and bedding have a similar effect, and tiny fairy lights can add a magical sparkle at night.
