The Smurfs On Tour – Smurfs 2

19th August 2013 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

Smurfs2
We are huge Smurf fans in our house, even daddy and I. We both grew up watching the Smurfs in the 80’s and loved taking the boys to see the first film. When we heard Smurfs 2 was coming out we knew we’d have to go see it.
We even took a Smurf with us on holiday, we posted pictures on Instagram, my Facebook and Twitter pages as to what we were up to with the Smurf. You can see some of the photos of him below. He even got a bit brave and slide down a Tyrannosaurus Rex’s tail. He was a very cheeky little Smurf, but we love him.

So what’s the Smurfs 2 all about? In this sequel to the hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants — and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs — Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world’s greatest sorcerer. It’s up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus – or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?
We went to see the Smurfs 2 on the last day of our family holiday together. It was awesome, we lived, sung and worried about poor Smurfette. Would Papa and the others ever find her? My youngest boy Tyler does not like Gargamel and was quite scared at bits, but he’s supposed to be scary, but he was fine when all became right with the Smurfs again. We absolutely loved the Smurfs 2 and will be getting it on DVD as soon as it’s out. The new Smurfs are hilarious and there are a few jokes thrown in for the adults. It really was one of those films where both adults and children alike come up feeling happy and had a great time. A must see in my book.
The following weekend we tried out some Smurf Cupcake recipes. They didn’t quite go to plan but here are our versions and the recipes are below. We did a bit of a mixture of the recipes. I’d love to know if you make them.
Smurf Cupcakes
We made some Papa Smurf Cupcakes and baby Smurf. With our blue cupcake mix, what do you think?

PAPA SMURF CUPCAKE:-

Since the inspiration for this cupcake recipe derives from the classic red velvet, we thought the name of this blue velvet cupcake is particularly fitting (well, Papa Smurf does like to wear a lot of red after all!)
Ingredients:
2 cups caster sugar
225g butter (soft)
2 eggs
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1 tbs royal blue food colouring
1 drop violet food colouring
2 ½ cups plain flour
1tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ tsp baking soda
1 tbsp white wine vinegar
For the Frosting:
1 tub cream cheese
225g butter (soft)
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 cups icing sugar
1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 4 and prepare a muffin tray with paper liners.
2. In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy in consistency and pale in colour.
3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well.
4. in a separate bowl, combine the cocoa powder and the food colouring before adding to the mixture.
5. Sift the flour and salt together and add to the mixture, alternating with the buttermilk until both have been completely added.
6. Add the vanilla extract.
7. In a separate bowl, mix together the vinegar and baking soda before adding. Mix thoroughly.
8. Divide the mixture between the cupcake liners (it should be a very thick batter).
9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.
10. Leave to cool.
For the frosting:
1. Beat the cream cheese, butter, and vanilla together until smooth.
2. Add the sugar and mix until light and fluffy.
3. Fill a piping bag with the frosting and pipe onto the cupcakes (remember to make sure they have fully cooled or the frosting will melt!) Enjoy!
SMURFETTE
The simplicity of this recipe will prove to be a sure winner for busy grown-ups and kids alike! Get them involved in the baking to create a fuss-free and fun afternoon baking session using this tried and tested vanilla cupcake recipe you can adapt into anything!
Ingredients:
4oz butter (softened)
4oz caster sugar
4oz self-raising flour
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 tsp vanilla extract
1-2 tbsp milk
hundreds and thousands or small gumballs (depending on age of children).
1 tsp blue food colouring
For the frosting:
5oz butter, softened
10oz icing sugar
1-2 tbsp milk
a few drops of red food colouring (just enough to make a baby pink hue)
1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 4 and prepare a muffin tray with paper liners.
2. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
3. Add the eggs a little at a time, stirring continuously.
4. Using a metal spoon, fold in the flour.
5. Add the milk a little at a time until the mixture just drips from the spoon.
6. Spoon the mixture into cases and bake for up to 15 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
For the frosting:
1. Beat the butter in a large bowl until soft before adding half of the icing sugar.
2. Continue to beat until smooth then add the rest of the icing sugar with 1 tablespoon of the milk until you develop a smooth creamy consistency (you may need to add more milk).
3. Add a few drops of the food colouring to make a gentle pink colour.
4. Spoon the icing into a piping bag and pipe onto the cupcakes (make sure they are cool first!)
5. Top with a single gumball or a sprinkling of hundreds and thousands.
CLUMSY SMURF
Why Clumsy Smurf we hear you ask? Just because he is one of our favourites! Don’t be fooled by the simple look of this cupcake, cutting into it yields a delicious white chocolate oozy centre we know you will love! (And it uses the simple cupcake recipe from the Smurfette!)
Ingredients:
4oz butter (softened)
4oz caster sugar
4oz self-raising flour
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 tsp vanilla extract
1-2 tbsp milk
For the ganache:
6oz good quality white chocolate, chopped into bite-sized pieces
4floz double cream
For the frosting:
5oz butter, softened
10oz icing sugar
1-2 tbsp milk
1. Bake the cupcakes as usual (see Smurfette recipe above).
2. Once the cupcakes are out of the oven, leave them to cool.
3. In a bowl over a pan of boiling water, melt the chocolate and cream together.
4. Remove from the heat once completely melted.
5. Scoop out the middle of each cupcake (about 2/3 of the way in).
6. Pipe the ganache in carefully.
7. Pipe the frosting on top and sprinkle with topping of your choice (we like white chocolate shavings!)
The Smurfs 2 came out on the 31st of July and is still in the cinemas, it’s awesome, I highly recommend you go and see it. Don’t forget to check out The Smurfs 2 Facebook page and Twitter.

Disclaimer:- I was sent two Smurf toys to take photographs of, I paid for the cinema myself and the cake ingredients, I have not been reimbursed for mentioning the Smurfs 2 and all thoughts are my own. We just love the Smurfs.
