Sweet Dreams for Mums to Be

16th January 2013 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

As any mother will attest, getting a decent nights sleep while heavily pregnant can be extremely difficult. Backache, heartburn even a weak bladder can all add up to weeks of interrupted sleep, making for an exhausted mum to be, and that’s before baby even makes an appearance!
Follow these helpful tips to give yourself the best chance possible of a refreshing nights sleep.
With pressure on the bladder from the baby, drinking as little as possible before bedtime will decrease the need to get up in the night to visit the bathroom. Don’t forget to drink plenty of liquids during the daytime though.
Gentle exercise during the day can reduce the chance of leg cramps at night-time. Don’t exercise too close to bedtime, as this will make you more awake.
Stress and worrying about the baby’s arrival is a major factor in sleeplessness for a new mummy. Talk to friends and family about your worries or write down those problems that are troubling you. Often when we write down what is on our mind, it helps us to stop fretting in the night.
Check that the bed is comfortable and is supporting you and the extra baby weight. If you are sleeping on an old mattress or a bed that has seen better days, then aching limbs and a sore back will be inevitable. Don’t put off buying a new bed if your old one has seen better days, Reylon beds have a fantastic range of quality beds which are designed to give the best support and comfort possible.
If heartburn is a problem, don’t lie down until at least two hours after eating and avoid foods that trigger your heartburn. When in bed, make sure your head is elevated on the pillows as this should help stop the rise of acid.
Once the baby is born there will be plenty of sleepless nights ahead. During the weeks leading up to the birth, sleep is essential, so be sure to do everything you can to ensure a decent nights sleep.
