Review – Christmas Gifts for Children of All Ages

27th November 2012 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

If you are looking for some inspiration for Christmas gifts for children of various ages, hopefully this post will help. We reviewed thirteen different toys and craft sets for different age ranges. Hopefully you will find something you are looking for.
For Ages 10 months and Up

Bananas in Pyjamas – Talking B1 or B2 Soft Toy – My youngest loves the Bananas in Pyjamas show. So getting a talking B1 made his day. These are great for younger children, probably up to about 5 or 6.
They are soft and cuddly and speak when their tummy is pressed. Each character says 5 different phrases. Batteries are included which is fab.
These are great toys and will keep little ones amused for hours. RRP£9.99.

Haba Rattling Figure – These are adorable little creatures aimed at children aged 1 and up. They are perfect for little hands to grip and are great additions to their little stockings. Perfect for a baby’s first Christmas. These are very well made and sturdy.

Made from Beech wood, threaded cord and non-toxic paint. RRP £13.99

Ages 3 and Up

Go MINI Crew-zers ar – These are fab little cars which are perfect for little hands. They are aimed at ages 3 and up. Although I feel that children who are a little younger could play with these fine too and they are a lot of fun for car mad older children too.
They are operated with 2 x AAA batteries which make the car making engine noises when they wheels turn. They look great, bright and colourful. There are 5 of these to collect and are a lot of fun. Perfect little stocking fillers or a gift for someone. RRP £6.50.

Schleich Prehistoric Animals – My oldest who is 5 is right into dinosaurs just now telling me all about the different species you get, what they eat, etc. So this is a perfect gift for him. There are many different ones to collect and each are hand painted and look amazing. They even have a movable jaw for role playing.
Schleich toys are great quality and last forever, this is one toy that should be on everyone’s list, especially dinosaur fans.
Perfect stocking fillers and great fun. RRP £9.99.

For Ages 5 and Up

ScatterBrainz  – The Super Sticky Darts, I reviewed these here a few months back. These are aimed at ages 5 and up, however my 3 year old loves them too, but due to the size I think they feel the need to put 5 + on it. These are great fun, come with their own target and are perfect stocking fillers. RRP £4.99.

Character Building Ben 10 Kevin’s Car – Ben 10 toys are very popular following on from the cartoon. Building block styles toys are a big hit with children of all ages and this is no exception. There are a whole range of Ben 10 construction micro-figures to collect, as well as larger sets like Kevin’s car and Azmuth’s laboratory.
Children will spend time building these fab toys as well as hours actually playing with them. This set has an opening bonnet and comes with a Ben 10 Microfigure. This is a very detailed vehicle and takes a while to build. It is recommend for ages 5 and up, however my 5 year old wasn’t able to build this on his own. Adult help is required but for older kids I’m sure they could do this on their own. It really is a great looking car and lots of fun to be had. RRP £9.99.

Trashie Street Sweeper – Trashie’s are the collectible series which is sweeping the country. The new series of the yucky characters are out just in time for Christmas.
If you no a Trashie fan or your child is then this is the must have gift. The Trashie Street Sweeper is aimed at ages 5 and up. The rollers in the sweeper, sweep up your Trashies into the waste catcher. This also includes two exclusive trashies. You can Tip n Flip your Trashies into the truck. All in all a lot of fun to be had with this vehicle. RRP £19.99.

Gelarti Activity Pack – Another great craft set aimed primarily at girls but my boys had lots of fun with this too. It’s aimed at ages 5 and up which I think is perfect. My oldest was able to do a lot of these on his own.
If your child is like mine and loves stickers then they will love this. Thankfully they are removable so no problems there. The paints are reusable and you can buy more stickers when you have finished with them. The only thing I will say is try not to use too much paint it will spill over onto the edges. And don’t forget you can mix colours. If you do make a mistake you can wipe the paint off with a wet cloth if the paint is still wet. The pack includes 5 Gelarti paint pens, 8 Gelarti sticker sheets, 1 activity book, 1 marbling tool, 1 card and 2 bag tags. Have lots of fun and at RRP £14.99.
For Ages 8 and Up
Ravensburger 3D Big Ben Puzzle – We love Jigsaw puzzles in our house. This one is a little advanced for the ages of my children, but it’s one I did myself one evening and let them look but not touch it. I was so proud of myself and had so much fun building it.
This is aimed at children aged 10 and above. Which I think is about right unless you have a child who is extremely patient and articulate. Although younger children could do this with a fair amount of adult help. Some bits are a bit fiddly but it’s a lot of fun and great for adults too. I’ve added a 3D puzzle to my Christmas list.
The puzzle is 216 pieces and builds up to a 40cm tall model of Big Ben. This is perfect for teenagers in that lull between opening gifts and Christmas dinner. The whole family can get involved. RRP £19.99
Green Science Green Rocket – I grew up with a love of science and doing science experiments as my dad was a scientist. I would like to encourage my boys to do the same. This is aimed at children aged 8 and above, again I felt age appropriate but I did do this with the boys and they loved it. I think under the right adult supervision slightly younger children would enjoy this too, but the full extent would be fully appreciated by older children. My boys just wanted to see if shoot up into the air, they weren’t interested in the how or why part yet.
This works by the user by using two recyclable empty plastic bottles and stamping on 1. The Green Science Green Rocket Science Kit contains: 1 Stand Arm, 1 Launch Tube, 1 Flexible Pipe, 2 Bottle Connector Halves, 2 Pipe Clamp Halves, 2 Foam Rocket Heads, 12 Fin Templates, 2 Rocket Templates, 3 Screws, 1 Set Small Nuts and Bolts, 1 Set Large Nuts, Bolts, Washer and Split Washer, 1 Double Sided Adhesive Tape, a full instruction guide with fun facts.
I know a few men who’d like this as well as a bit of a novelty gift, something a bit extra to add to their Christmas stockings. RRP £14.99

Technokit Rivetz Giant Hornet Kit – This is a bit of an unusual craft kit, one I wouldn’t have normally picked up. It’s not something I would like but the boys loved it. Being aimed at ages 8 and up they were too young to do this on their own but they helped me build this giant insect and really enjoyed doing it.
The best thing about this kit is that it comes with a Rivetz gun, yes this is so much fun. The plastic rivets are reusable so if you do make a mistake you can remove them and add them back in. The instructions are quite easy to follow and although a little tricky it’s fairy easy to build. There is no glue involved and the model shapes are on pre-printed card which are pre-cut.There are many different kits available from Technokit Rivetz. RRP £12.99.
myStyle Deluxe Charm Bracelets – This is perfect for girls and my nieces loved it. They were a bit young being six to play with it themselves as it’s aimed at ages 8 and up but we had lots of fun making these together. There is hours of fun in this box making lots of fantastic looking accessories. From coloured clays to beads and charms. You can oven bake the clay with the rivet inside having twisted it anyway you like.
The instructions are very easy to use and the accessories you can make look amazing. We were all really pleased with these and I even have a few I’ve kept for myself. Great fun and look fab. RRP £19.99.

AppGear Dr. Who Cleric Wars App Game and QLA Device – This is one type of game we haven’t really gotten into yet. You need 2 AAA batteries which aren’t included but the most important thing is you need to use an iPhone 4 and above, iPod Touch 4th Generation, Android 2.3.3 or above phones, 1Ghz processor, 512MB, uses back-facing camera, and must support iPhone headphones with built-in microphone. Not something every child has, but is is aimed at ages 10 and above, probably suited more for a teenager or adult who is a Doctor Who fan.
The game and App itself is very cool, it uses AR technology which means that it uses your surroundings as part of the game. It is good that it’s in the format of a gun so it’s easy to use and a lot of fun. It comes with a smart device holder which protects the phone well enough so it doesn’t get scratched and holds it securely.
The game quality is very good. I really enjoyed playing with this even though I’m not a Doctor Who Fan, is is a type of game I’ve never played before and really was fun. Only downside is that at RRP £19.99 it’s only able to be used for one game. But if you are getting it for a Doctor Who fan then they will love.
