Pregnancy – How’s it all going?

20th August 2012 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

Since telling everyone at about 13 weeks I haven’t posted much about the pregnancy. I’m not 16 weeks and the last few weeks have been tough if I’m honest. I’ve been working as normal, the boys have been off school and nursery which has been great, but are back now. So all the back to school stuff had to get done.
I started in a lot of pain in my back about 15 weeks and turned out I had a kidney infection, the first now doubt of many. I have a chronic kidney disease called glomerular thin basement membrane disease. You can have a wee read if you fancy knowing more about it. It means my kidney’s don’t quite function as well as normal kidneys but they still do enough and work well enough that I don’t need medical intervention. I have to drink a lot to flush them through and I have a few other issues with pain and the loss of blood and protein through urine, apart from that everything is not too bad. I do get seen by the renal clinic every six months, but so far so good.
During pregnancy you are more susceptible to kidney and urine infections but with my disease I am higher risk. My kidneys were fine with my previous two pregnancies, I did have some infections but not until later on and the kidneys worked better during pregnancy so they said. What’s happened this time? I don’t know but I’ve had my first dose of anti biotics and the infection has eventually cleared up. The worst part of it was I was unable to pass urine at all, not even a little bit. At one point I looked about 9 months pregnant my bladder was so full. After being catheterised twice it started to get a bit better.
The water works have been better this week and the pain is easing. The sickness isn’t so bad, just in the evenings, so all in all this week has been a good week pregnancy wise.
After a bit of a bump in the road so to speak with the hospital care on Monday, disaster where they sent me to the wrong clinic and had no idea why I was there, after I wasted 2 hours of waiting, I got my care sorted out by my lovely consultant and midwife at the health centre. I will be seen 4 weekly, samples will be sent each time I’m there and I have been put on aspirin as I’m high risk of high blood pressure due to having the kidney thingy and previous pre-eclampsia. I also go to hear the baby’s heartbeat as I genuinely thought I’d squished bubs with my huge bladder. I hadn’t. So other than then taking 5 attempts to get blood it was all good and positive.
My bump still looks a bit like I’ve ate a few too many pies than there is a baby in there but it’s getting there. Work clothes are getting tighter, so I’ve looked out and washed all the maternity clothes ready to jump into them when the bump is a bit more prominent.
Haven’t really thought about names yet as I’m still trying to decide whether or not to find out the sex of the baby. I do and I don’t, you know that ever changing mind we have. I found out with Tyler but didn’t with Lucas. I’m sure it’ll be another boy, saves on changing from blue stuff and boys are fab.
We have also managed to convince Tyler that I won’t be having a baby piggy. We took him to see some pigs at the local park. He decided they were a bit smelly to live in the house. So he’s sticking with all his soft toy pigs. Phew. I was beginning to think we’d have one upset little boy when he came to meet his new brother or sister at the hospital.
Here’s the bump at 15 weeks. Not a great picture but that’ll teach me to take maternity pictures myself. Looks like I’ve ate a few too many pies.
