Last week the boys were off school and nursery due to the voting. I had swapped my day off to be with them and had nipped into Hobbycraft the weekend to pick up some supplies to have a fun craft day.
Firstly we made some paper mache animals. Well that was the plan but Lucas changed his as you’ll see. We started cutting up the strips of newspaper and I blew up the balloons. You can read the story behind the newspaper and page 3 here.
Once the pile of paper strips was ready I made up the glue. I used 1 cup of flour and two cups of water and mixed together in a bowl. We started adding them to the balloon. Make sure you have something holding the balloon to keep it from falling off or sticking due to static. I added some cut out egg boxes for the pigs feet and nose and covered with paper and glue.

Once completed covered in two layers I put them outside to dry in the sunshine. While we were waiting on them drying we got the paints out. We did some sponge painting, finger painting, painting with brushes and them some hand prints. Here’s our creations.
Once the paper mache was dry we set about painting it. Lucas decided he wanted to make the earth and Tyler was making a pig of course.
They got their colours all ready and started the task of painting. Once complete I put them outside to dry. They took a long time to dry. Over night in fact.
Once dry we hung them up in the boys room. A flying pig and the earth.
We had so much fun doing this together and they turned out great. I will definitely be doing this again. Have you tried Paper Mache before?
