Decorating a Children’s Bedroom

4th April 2012 By Susan Mann 1 Comment

Decorating a baby’s room is pretty easy I think, even if you don’t know the sex. Mainly because you decide, we didn’t know the sex so I went for generic colours white and creams with a loved coloured border. It was a gorgeous baby’s room. However, when we moved, we decided he wasn’t quite the tiny baby any more.
Lucas was 8 months old so his personality was just starting to come through. He was my first child and I thought it would be a good idea to go for some of his favourite character from Playhouse Disney. He loved the bright colours and the catchy tunes. I thought I would paint some of his favourite characters onto his room wall.

Handy Manny’s Tools
Pluto

My Friends Tigger & Pooh

And a 3ft Tall Mickey Mouse
Now I am very proud of my paintings on the wall, which seemed like a great idea at the time and I still love them but my little ones are growing out of these. Why did I think it would be a good idea to paint characters on their walls?
Last year I changed their room a little. Lucas felt he was too old for the characters but Tyler was just getting into them. I put a lot of effort and love into them so I kept them. However, for Lucas I added some Disney Cars stickers and wall décors and got Disney cars bedding, curtains, etc. Yes, I fell into that trap again. I am hoping Disney Cars is more of a timeless classic and they will stick to this for longer.
My mum bought the boys Football Bus bunk beds for their Christmas. These are fantastic, they are solid, very well made, look fantastic and have a large lip above the mattress on the top bunk so I don’t have to worry about Lucas falling out. I am hoping this is generic enough to last them many years to come. It is blue, but apart from that, the theme and colour scheme of the room can be altered.
How do you have your children’s rooms decorated? Have you put characters on their walls or have you gone for more of a neutral theme?
