Baking Mad – A Valentine’s Gingerbread House

9th February 2012 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

In January of this year I was chatting to the lovely Jessie’s Crazy Kitchen on twitter about Gingerbread houses. I had never made one before and really wanted to. It is even on my list of things to do before I turned 40. So we challenged each other to make one for each special occasion this year. First up being Valentine’s Day.
When I was picked as 1 of the 15 lucky bloggers for the Baking Mad Valentine’s Blogger Competition and was sent this box of lovely goodies, I had to put them to good use on my Gingerbread house.

I made the Gingerbread house from a standard recipe and template I found online and adapted it to suit.
However, things didn’t quite go to plan. I ended up with some cracks. It was my first one and I think I made the gingerbread to thick in places and too thin in others. I will play around with the recipe for next time.
Luckily I had some fantastic Silver Spoon Easy Melt Milk Chocolate Cake Covering. I covered the Gingerbread House in this as some plaster and the cracks were no more.
Ok, so it doesn’t look much here, but just wait. I also added some Silver Spoon White Chocolate Letters and Numbers spelling out I love you on one side and Happy Valentines Day on the other.
For the decorations I used Silver Spoon Lemon Flavour Icing and added 2 egg white and some red food colouring to make the icing for the roof.
I added some Silver Spoon Pink Shimmer Balls, some Silver Spoon Duo Chocolate hearts around the icing and one the roof. I used the Silver Spoon Giant Snowies as the windows.
My icing is another thing I need practice on, but again it’s a start.
All in all I thought it turned out not too bad for a first attempt. And it is certainly something I would want to receive for Valentine’s day. It’s something a little different, tasty and a lot of love was put into this gift. I hope my husband and children appreciate it.
What do you think? Is it something you would like for Valentines Day?

I have to say the Silver Spoon products were great and I will be buying more for my next Gingerbread house creation, so watch this space.
Disclaimer:- I was sent the Silver spoon products above for the Baking Made Valentine’s Blogger Competition.
