Coughs, Colds & Asthma – This Will Help

18th November 2011 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

Babies and children get more than their fair share of coughs and colds. I remember all the sleepless nights with a little snuffly baby, they just can’t breathe through those little noses. I always had the moses basket, cot or bed at a slant and used those plug ins with the menthol.
Then my oldest developed breathing problems. My husband has asthma so it looked like he would inherit it too. He wasn’t diagnosed at first as he was too young, just given medication and inhalers. Yesterday we were at the asthma clinic for the first time as he has finally been diagnosed. He now has a preventative inhaler to take twice a day and the one for when his breathing is bad. All to be taken through his spacer, which we are used to using and so is he.
His breathing is bad just now, he is very wheezy and coughing a lot due to the fact we are getting double glazing fitted and a new ceiling in the kitchen. So it’s very dusty. I have tried to keep his room as dust free as possible but not always the case.
Just over a month ago I was sent a Vicks Paediatric Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier VH5000 I do not know why I hadn’t bough a Humidifier before now. These little pieces of equipment are amazing. I have the humidifier setup in the boys room and have it on each evening. You can control the amount of steam that comes out of the nozzle and you can also angel the direction in which is comes out, using a 360′ nozzle. Filling it up is very easy and it switches itself off if the water runs out during the night. It is quite to run, there is no noisy motor so the children sleep soundly and its cool to touch.
Just now or when the boys have coughs and colds I had in one of the Vicks menthol pads  which work for 8 hours. These are great for helping ease the congestion and making them breath easier. Both boys love having it switched on at night, it looks great when switched on as you can see the mist coming out, it looks magical  and the oldest always switches it off in the morning. It is done so by turning the dial. We also have the antibacterial cartidge in it which kills bacteria and virus which may be in the water.
Why does a Humidifier work so well in the cold and flu season? “Part of the reason for increased respiratory illnesses during this time is because humidity levels in the air reach a yearly low.” SA, manufacturer of Vicks humidifiers under a license to the Vicks trademark. Studies show that keeping indoor air at a relative humidity level of 40-60% reduces the survival of flu viruses on surfaces and in the air. “One of the first things doctors recommend when a child comes down with a cold is to use a humidifier, as this can help loosen congestion and soothe a sore throat. Proper humidification is especially important.” said Ricardo Novella, Brand Manager Healthcare at Kaz Europe.
I think this is one of the best products I have ever come across. Prefect for helping with colds and if your child has asthma this is a big help. I have noticed there has been less coughing at night with the humidifier on. The room just seems clearer to breath in and I love having the menthol in, I love the smell of menthol. I really and genuinely cannot praise this product enough it has been a God send. It is a little on the expensive side, but worth every penny. Amazon have a deal on it right now. I would recommend everyone with children to get one of these, you won’t regret it and it has a two year warranty as well.
Disclaimer:- I was sent the Humidifier, menthol pads and antibacterial filter to review and give my honest opinion on.
