So you all know our house has been struck down with the Chicken pox. It all started when my oldest Lucas, who is 4 started coming out in spots on our first day of our holidays. We weren’t anywhere exotic and thank goodness we weren’t abroad and had potentially infected an entire plane load, we were at Whitely Bay in North England. This was the second week in August and we were in a caravan, the weather also wasn’t great.
The first day we were unsure if it was chicken pox, he seemed not to be itchy at first, however by bedtime there were visible blisters and spots cropping up all over the place. I gave him calpol and he went to sleep. He still didn’t seem itchy.
Next day we got him checked at the pharmacy and 99% sure chicken pox, so we got some Vira soothe gel, Piriton and ibuprofen for fever. Lucas was covered in spots by this time, in his hair, mouth and all over his body. The little one Tyler was showing no signs. So we gave Lucas Piriton, covered him in gel which he didn’t like as it was cold. I would have thought that was a good thing, but he didn’t like it. Also gave him the paracetamol and ibuprofen. We got some calamine with glycerin in also since he didn’t like Vira soothe.
Over the next few days we were pretty much caravan bound. The weather wasn’t great and well Lucas was contagious. The caravan park was great and the caravan was really nice too. So what to do? We played ladders and hoses aka snakes and ladders.
We played happy families and donkey card games. And sneaked to the play ground when there was no one around.
We visited the beach and the lighthouse. What gorgeous scenery.
We still had a lovely family holiday together. Albeit not perfect. It was still really good to spend some time as a family, when we work so much.
We got back home and Lucas was due to start school on the Wednesday. Thankfully all his spots had dried up before hand, I would have hated him to miss his first day of school. So off he went, with a few marks but well and not contagious. Tyler still showing no signs.
That week I started to feel unwell, really bad headaches and very tired. Come Sunday night I started to come out in a few spots. I thought must be viral as they didn’t look like Lucas’ spots. I went to work on Monday and more and more started to come out. I felt pretty grim and went to the pharmacist, who diagnosed chicken pox. So back to work and then came home with chicken pox. I already took anti histamines for another itchy problem to do with my kidneys so I didn’t need anymore. I already had all the lotions and potions, but being a mummy and being ill is hard as we all know. You will need to get up during the night, you still need to get up in the morning. No lying about and resting for me. My hubby did help as much as he could however.
It drove me up the wall, the constant itching, the aching and feeling generally yuck. I was told Poxcil was good. Which I got, it was good, but I do think ViraSoothe was the best. On the Tuesday my youngest started coming out in spots. He got totally covered. He is only two, so although we are potty training him, he wears a pull-up and where the nappy/pullup is he was totally covered, all his wee bits and bum wee guy. So he was in a lot of pain.
I was up most of the night with him, didn’t do my tolerance to the itching much good and I was a grumpy cow come morning. With only an hours sleep between the two boys, not good. I was downright miserable. Plus I was working from home rather than being in the office, so I was doing that. Thankfully my mum and my inlaws were still watching the boys during the day.
Tyler got the same treatments as his brother got but he’s a lot more stubborn and refused to take the medicine and spat it out or didn’t want the creams on. Took a lot of persuading but we got there.
So two weeks from when my oldest got chicken pox to when I got it and then my little one got it in a matter of days. So we are now into our fourth week of chicken pox. The oldest is fine, other than some marks which will take there time to heal. I am almost there, with the exception of a few blisters, feeling washed out and potentially an infected pox but I’m getting there. And lastly my little one, his spots are all starting to dry up and he’s back to his usual cheeky self. Just a few more spots to dry up and we can be let back out into society.
I am well and truly fed up all Pox, Pox and Pox. Thankfully hubby has missed out. I have to say I’d recommend ViraSoothe and Piriton as the main helpers for Chicken pox. But top of the list, lots of cuddles.
Here’s hoping to a few months of illness free, or I may actually go insane.
