Book Review – Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting

3rd June 2011 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

Description:- Violet can sense the echoes of those who’ve been murdered—and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. Only those closest to her know what she is capable of, but when she discovers the body of a young boy she also draws the attention of the FBI, threatening her entire way of life.

As Violet works to keep her morbid ability a secret, she unwittingly becomes the object of a dangerous obsession. Normally she’d turn to her best friend, Jay, except now that they are officially a couple, the rules of their relationship seem to have changed. And with Jay spending more and more time with his new friend Mike, Violet is left with too much time on her hands as she wonders where things went wrong. But when she fills the void by digging into Mike’s tragic family history, she stumbles upon a dark truth that could put everyone in danger.
Review:- After reading the first book in this series The Body Finder, the review is here, I was hooked. This was one of my favourite books from last year. I could not wait to read Desires of the Dead and I have to say I loved every minute of it. So much so I was up all night when I went away with my family reading it. I lay in bed, the world silent and read all about the wonderful relationship of Jay and Violet. I cried tears of sadness when I thought things were going bad and cried tears of joy when things were going good. I have never read a book in such a long time which stirred so much emotion in me.

Desires of the Dead picks up a few months after the dramatic ending of The Body Finder. The third person narrative works perfectly for these books, allowing multiple plot lines to run seamlessly, along with twists and turns along the way. You also get to go inside the head of someone trying to threaten Violet, this makes the book unique and makes it a little more creepy. The book is a real page turner, you have to find out what is going to happen next. The plot is fast paced and keeps you wanting more and more and more.

I have to say Jay and Violet are one of my favourite literary couples. Between Violet’s ability to detect echos left behind by murder victims, the same echos that are carried around by their killers and Jay’s over-protectiveness of her, they work perfectly together. I cannot think of a better way for two virgins to have their first time together than the way they had it. Unplanned, natural, but protected and perfect. If I could go back, I’d want my first time to be the way Kimberly Derting wrote for Jay and Violet. Don’t get me wrong, you know it happened and it really was perfect but there were no gory details, which made it all the nicer.

I could get a bit carried away with my love of Jay and Violet’s relationship but there is more of a plot in this book than just them. Violet’s talent lead her to the body of a young boy, however this time she is not alone, someone is watching her and threatening her. If that wasn’t enough she also has the FBI sniffing around her trying to get her to admit that she can sense and find bodies. She is not quite willing to admit that secret.

Violet’s independent streak stops her from telling Jay or her parents to begin with, but how long can she deal with it on her own? There are so many twists and curve balls thrown in to this mix, you think you have it figured out and another twist throws it out the water. There is a new boy in school, whom Jay befriends, he has a little sister Megan. Chelsea, Violet’s friend develops a huge crush resulting in some double dates. Violet’s friends are in this book more, which pleased me. Always good that a girl keeps her friends and doesn’t dump them when she has found a beau.

I was actually gutted when this book ended. The ending was amazing and left me wanted more but I was so sad to leave Jay and Violet behind until next time.

I would highly recommend this book, read The Body Finder first however. The book hooks you in and keeps you there until the end. You will not be disappointed.
