World Book Day, Book Aid International & World Book Night

3rd March 2011 By Susan Mann Leave a Comment

Anyone who reads my blog will know I love to read. I’m passionate about books. I want to write books. I love to talk about books. I love reading to my boys. I just love books. So I thought I would tell you about three book events which are going on this week.
Today is World book day. This was designated by  UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. Many books shops, schools, publishers, online sellers, library’s and many other book like places have various events.  World book day is about encouraging children to read, enjoy reading and to have fun with it. A lot of schools, pre-schools, etc encourage the children to dress up as one of their favourite characters from a book. For more information on World Book Day click here.

Book Aid International is one of the charities which benefits from World Book Day. Book Aid International increases access to books and supports literacy, education and development in sub-Saharan Africa. We provided 507,787 new books to over 2,000 libraries last year alone and have sent more than 30 million books to partner libraries since 1954. Click here to find out more information and how you can help. UK schools have a natural empathy with Book Aid Internationals work, and show their support each year on World Book Day. So far in 2010, schools have raised nearly £50,000 through their World Book Day celebrations for Book Aid International, enough to provide nearly 25,000 books to libraries in the developing world.
You can check out the Book Aid Internation Blog for information on where the books go, what sort of books they send and what people are up to for World Book Day.

They are on twitter and facebook Why not check out their pre-school activities here

On Saturday it is World Book Night, this is a night when publishing professionals come together and allow one million books to be given away by passionate book lovers to people who may love or hate books, but should give it a go. The rest will go to hospitals, prisons, etc. You can see the choice of books being given away here. It’s a fantastic and amazing thing. Books should be read, enjoyed and celebrated.
There are so many events up and down the country, check them out here.
Book Aid International are also having an event for World Book Night, details of which can be found here
So what are you waiting for go share, read, enjoy and go to an event.
