Children’s Comforters

16th September 2010 By Susan Mann 8 Comments

I was watching my two little ones sleep the other evening, don’t you dare say you think that’s weird I know you all do it!! They look like little angels, so sweet and innocent. Not like the little devils they can be when they are awake.

My three year old Lucas sleeps with not one but five “Bluey’s” these are little “It’s a boy” bears you get when you have a new born. They have a stuffed head but flat body. He got a little one of these when he was born and has never let go since. I bought an extra few in case one got lost but he found them and keeps them all. They go everywhere with him. The dummy was easy to get rid of, these I have no idea. They all have individual names, but I have no idea how he tells them apart but believe me he can.

Tyler my nineteen month old, fell in love with a penguin in the shop at Edinburgh zoo when we visited there when he was about six months old. He has never let it go and takes it everywhere and sleeps with it every night. One day, at the shopping centre, the little rascal through it out his buggy. It was lost, frantically searching everywhere but didn’t find it. Hubby had to go to Edinburgh zoo the next day to purchase two more, no sleep was had that night. One as a spare.

Do your children have comforters? Is it a good or a bad thing? I think it is a good thing, no matter where they go it’s a little piece of home. It’s easier than a dummy and doesn’t look as bad when they are older. Plus I’m sure they grow out of sleeping with them, or I am hoping anyway. Tell me your stories…

Oh that photo of your little one asleep with his penguin is SO adorable! My 3 all have muslin squares and they all have different types and do different things with them. 3yo cannot sleep without a corner of one stuffed in his mouth. It looks awful… but try pulling it out and you get a screaming rage as thanks. The good thing about these is that they come in packs of 8!

Three of my four have! My son who is 12 still has a toy Kangeroo that he has had since he was a baby and still sleeps with it every night. My 11yo daughter sucks her thumb and has a bib that she had as a baby as a comforter. My 2yo also sucks her thumb and has a dolly called Baba that she drags everywhere and we can't go anywhere without her! But my 4th doesn't have any comforters. She used a dummy but they went to the fairies *cough* I don't think that there is any harm in having comforters at all x

My 5yr old boy does – he has a 'naah' which is the last remaining scrap of his baby blanket. He sleeps fabulously, he's laid back and settled as a result 🙂 firmly believe they should have them for as long as they want

I don't think there is any harm in it. Baba has his muslin's or mossies as they are called in our house, he goes to sleep with about three. He rubs the tags on them and we have lots in the house. He does still have a dummy for sleep at the moment, but that will be going soon, but I wont be trying to get rid of the mossies. I think it would break his heart. When I told my mum I was pregnant she went upstairs and got my yellow duck that I carried everywhere with me as a child. I told her when I was about eight to put it away safe for my children and she did! Bless her. It came to school with me, went on my first Brownie trip and everything. It now sits on the end of Baba's bed and he tells you its Mummies duck xx

Thank you all for your great comments, it's a real help. I'm glad the "dummy faries" took the dummy away but I'm keeping Penguy and bluey for as long as needed or wanted. Rebecca, Ty is at a wedding there with his penguin suit on :)Twinny, strange your 4th doesn't have a comforter. Whimsical, that's great he is a lot more settled, I think my two are as well. Kerry, the duck story is so cute. x

Caleb has a Steiff moonbear comforter. Its the same stuffed head and cloth body. We stupidly washed it once and he was only 4 months old. He didnt sleep all night until i eventually gave him it wet. I've since bought another one, but he can tell the difference. He also has a Ewan the dream sheep from easidream. We only got it when he was 11 months old but he always has it in with him too and if he wakes through the night he lies clicking its legs for the sounds until he drifts off again. We have a spare of that too now. My 13 year old daughter has a dolpin I bought her when she was 6 months old shes named JoJo. Its still in her bed and went everywhere overnight with her up until the last 2 months. Thats when you know theyre really not a child anymore. :o( xx

So glad it's not just my two with comforters. I think it's a good thing. Aww that's so sad your daughter is too old for JoJo, that really is sad. xx
