My First Writing Workshop Post

26th May 2010 By Susan Mann 5 Comments

This is my first post for the lovely Josie at Sleep is for the Week’s Writing Workshop, so bear with me.
I took the word Escape from Josie’s prompts and used it to tell the story of my boyfriend, now husband and I first trip away. Our first escape…
Our holiday was amazing, the hotel was gorgeous, the place was lovely, and the weather was great. Robert and I had a ball in Golden Sands in Bulgaria. We didn’t do much sunbathing as we went on a lot of excursions and trips. Our room was big, with a balcony and spotless, there were three bars, which were opened until the last person left, three big outdoor pools and one indoor pool, shop, exchange and cleaners there 24 hours a day.
The food in the hotel buffet for dinner wasn’t great so we only ate there one night, the rest we ate out. I loved the breakfast buffet in the hotel, that was good, especially the freshly made crepes mmmmmmmmmm! We didn’t do that much at night with being up and doing stuff during the day, we went for a meal, went to a couple of bars for drinks, and went for some walks. We went to this cocktail bar quite a lot, which had lovely cocktails and a great atmosphere. The beach was gorgeous, pure white sand and clear blue sea.
The first trip we went o was Jeep Safari, we were all picked up in old army jeeps, they then take you out into the countryside for some off road driving and water fights with the other jeeps. I was soaking and very dirty. During this, they have little stops; the first one was a typical Bulgarian house, which produced Brandy. By law each Bulgarian house can produce up to 50 litres of Brandy per year so what tends to happen is one house produces it for the whole village. Most of Bulgaria is still in the dark ages, using horses, and carts to get around to holes in the floor as a toilet. The brandy filtering system consists of a bucket with a cloth to drain it though! It tastes pretty good considering. We also got to see where honey is produced, a typical Bulgarian house/pub, and coffee. For lunch they put on a big barbeque in a clearing in a forest, there were loads of others there and there was a small group and singers. It was a fun day.
We went Scuba diving on Sunday, it was awesome, and you got to see what is like a completely different world. I wasn’t sure I could go through with it as I was struggling a bit at the start when taking the air out and putting it back in under water but I soon got the hang of it. My dive was about ½ hour, I got to hold a sea horse, also stroke a trumpet fish and I feed some of the fish using muscles three different times. I brought back two shells I picked up whilst diving and my instructor gave me a crab claw he picked up on our dive.
Our next trip was to the Dolphinarium on our trip to Varna, I thought the performing dolphins were cool; Robert liked them but not as much as he has been to the performances in Florida, which are bigger. There was a wee baby dolphin that was only 7 months old and he was trying to copy what his mum and dad were doing, but he wasn’t doing that well. However, it was so cute. The trip then took us on to the town of Varna, it was a bit scary, and the atmosphere around you seemed to put us on edge. There are a lot of shady looking characters and pickpockets around. We went to the cathedral, which is the biggest in the country, it was very impressive, and the paintings on the ceiling, etc were lovely.
Overall, we had a great time and would definitely go back in a minute. Come on lottery win!
