Racing car games have been around for years. They are loved by both boys and girls, young and old. I remember my dad buying me a car racing game for my birthday one year. To be honest it was years before I was old enough to play it, my dad certainly got more use out of it. However, I loved it when I got to play. We’d spend hours racing round the track. I wanted something similar for our children and I to play together of a similar nature. Over the years we’ve tried a few, but none were suitable. Either too complicated or simply rubbish. All it not lost, along came the Anki OVERDRIVE and it is all you could ever want in a car racing game and more. Honestly, this is the best car racing toy/game ever! Not a statement I take likely, but everyone of us love, love, love this.
We downloaded the app onto the boys iPad’s. It’s free and available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Initially we thought the boys would play away with it. First time round the track and hubby and I were downloading the app to our phones wanting in on the action. The app is simple and easy to use and great fun. The PR describes the Anki OVERDRIVE perfectly; “If Mario Kart and Scalextric had a baby, Anki OVERDRIVE would be the love child.” This is spot on.
We opened the box and put onto the charging station while we setup the awesome track. The track joins together quickly, simply, stays together and stays flat. It comes apart easily, simply and can be put away again for another day. Each part of the track is flexible. It is black with orange plastic parts where they join together which encase the magnets. The magnets hold the track snugly and easy to pull apart. Genius.
So what exactly is this awesome thing you keep talking about; well Anki OVERDRIVE combines the traditional slot car racing track with the video game element liken with Mario Kart. Sound strange? Let me explain; the cars are charged in the docking station, they are then controlled via the app on your phone or tablet using bluetooth. You can play on your own or with opponents which are in the same wifi network.
When you place the cars on the track and set it up through the app they do a sight lap to get to know the track, it is very clever. You don’t need to drive the cars as such, they are paired with the app via Bluetooth and the cars drive on their own. You do however have the power to accelerate or slow down, using the gear like stick on the app and you steer from tilting your device from side to side. Everything else is handled via the app. Via the app your cars battle and race your cars against the app or another place. These cars are no ordinary cars, no, they have their very own personality and weapons. You can build on these weapons the more you play. Winning different weapons to use against your opponent.
These are not just racing cars, these are characters in the game. The weapons can be fired to speed up the car with a boost or disable your opponent, rendering them unable to move for short time.
In the starter kit you get 10 Anki OVERDRIVE track pieces. This is made up of 4 x straight pieces and 6 x curved pieces. You get 2 supercars, which are Skull and GroundShock, a 4 car charging station, 2 riser pieces you can use as a bridge and a tyre cleaner. The starter kit allows you to create 8 different tracks to play with the cars on. Allowing up to 4 cars to be raced at a time. Playing against friends and family or why not take on the “Al Commanders” in a quest to become champion of the Anki OVERDRIVE tournament. There is so much to do with this product it is mind blowing. It’s so much more than a car racing game and so much more than a video game. It’s like a video game come to life.
As you can see each of the cars have their own name, speed, firepower and special weapons, each doing something different, but you can build on them. These make gameplay that bit more interesting. Have a look on the supercars page on the Anki site to find out what each car does to chose the ones you want to add to your collection.
We also loved the riser pieces which allow the track to be lifted in a bridge style or a jump which adds to the fun. It is simple to move the track and it can be put up just about anywhere.
Tyler is a little on the younger side for playing this, but he’s a clever 7 year old and used to game play with his older brother. Both he and Lucas who is 9 found this great fun and were able to set it up and navigate through the app without any problem. Aria wanted a go too, she’s only 3, so far too young, but the fact you aren’t actually having to drive the cars meant she could hold their iPads and felt like she was racing the same as her brothers.
We made a little video of our gameplay. It’s not great, the kids came down poorly over the last few days so I am hoping to add lots more video over the next few weeks so watch and follow our YouTube Channel for lots more Anki OVERDRIVE fun.
We are looking forward to building a HUGE track and I’ve even seem some of the footage with it doing down stairs, due to the tracks flexibility, how cool is that. I’ve included the Anki OVERDRIVE YouTube Video as I think it is awesome.
The Anki OVERDRIVE is one of our favourite toys ever!! It is great for everyone from ages 8 upwards, you and old. It would appeal to teenagers who love game play, but would still like to play with a cool toy. I’ve told everyone about it and I know my husband loved it and the boys haven’t stopped playing with it since we got it. It is simple to put away and put back up again in minutes. Once the cars are charged, away you go. It’s great you can add to it with different cars and expansion track packs. Great ideas for Christmas gifts and something to grow on. The quality is excellent and the cars charge quickly. It does let you know on the app when the charge is running low. I cannot recommend this enough you really have to give it a go.
The Anki OVERDRIVE is available from Anki OVERDRIVE direct. Also available from Harrods and Amazon. With an RRP of £149.99 for the starter kit which includes everything you need to get started. This will allow 8 different tacks and two different cars to race with. It might seem a bit expensive, but for a main gift or a joint gift I think it is excellent value for money. It is superb quality and a lot of fun. Trust me, you’ll find yourself saying ooh, ahh and wow the minute you see this work. What do you think?
Disclaimer:- We received the Anki OVERDRIVE, expansion pack and 2 cars in exchange for a review on the blog. All words and opinions are my own. We truly loved this, I think you will too.
