Last October we went on a caravan holiday to one of the Haven holiday parks, we’ve been to a few of them, but had never been to Haggerston Castle Holiday Park. This is situated in Northumberland, near Berwick Upon Tweed. It’s about 2 – 2 1/2 hours drive from us, so it feels like you are still getting away, but without the long journey. We have been on several caravan holidays since having children, even one for our honeymoon which too was a Haven one actually at the Berwick Upon Tweed site. We have always had a great time and there is something for everyone.
When we arrived at Haggerston Castle Holiday Park, we were amazed at the sheer size of the park, it really is huge. There are hundreds of caravans and vast acres to walk through. It certainly is one of the largest we have been too, and probably is one of the nicest in terms of the scenery and even has a lake situated within the park. Plus it has pony riding within the park and you can see the pony’s as you walk round. There are lots of places to go out with the bikes and scooters, not needing to worry about cars. The park itself is endearing and has a lot of character, fun to play tag, hide and seek to just go for a walk. If that’s not your thing, how about trying the 9 hole golf course? There is also a beach close by where you can go for a little paddle or some sandcastle building. Lots the activities are chargeable on top of your access into the complex, it can mount it, so make sure you budget a little extra.
Our caravan was amazing, it was large, very spacious with two bedrooms. One which had twin beds, one with a double. Aria slept in a travel cot in our room. There was plenty of wardrobe space and there was a toilet, wash hand basin and shower. The later had two door entries one from our room and one form the hallway. The kitchen was well equipped and had a table for dining at. The living room was a lovely large space, bright with large windows and over looked the lake. This was the boys and Aria’s favourite part. They would sit at the window for hours watching the ducks and swans come and go. The loved to go out and feed them. This was definitely the highlight of the holiday for them and it was stunning to watch.
If the weather isn’t great there is an indoor pool with a water slide, you can use this at certain times throughout the day and there is the option of swimming lessons. Best get in there quick though, as it can be very busy at peak times. The boys took a swimming lesson whilst there and really enjoyed it. The swimming lessons aren’t included in your access pass and are chargeable, but they aren’t too expensive I felt.
For the adults there is the entertainment at night, where the kids can dance and play and you can relax and have a drink or two. However, we found this got very busy and if bingo is your thing, get there early. We opted to spend our evenings playing some board games with the kids, they are early risers, so staying out late isn’t really the best when you want a lovely family fun day the next day. When the kids were in bed, my husband and I would watch a film or the tv, just enjoyed our time together. It was lovely and the kids loved having us around with no work or chores to do. During the day there is a spa, where you can go and relax and have a few treatments done. I unfortunately never made it to the spa, so can’t comment on what it’s like, it did look lovely and reasonably priced. We were too busy out and about during the day visit various different places.
As with all Haven holiday parks, there are kids shows, clubs and lots of characters walking about and keeping the children entertained. The kids program they have there promotes exercise and healthy eating, through fun, play, dancing, activities and crafts. Rory the Tiger and his friends entertain the kids and are great with them. The dressed-up characters are always accompanied by a non-dressed up character who talks on their behalf and helps the character get about. The kids all love these characters and get caught up in all the merchandise which goes with them, from cuddly toy versions to whistles and everything in between. Yes you too will come home with at least one thing containing one of these characters. There are also lots of slot machines, with their flashing lights and spend lots of money in me, hypnotising ways. I am not keen on these, but I know lots of people are, so I will leave this up to your judgement. You have to walk past them to get to the entertainment and the pool. There is also a Burger King and a chip shop there, which is great if you want a snack or take away, if you don’t fancy cooking for that evening.
We ate in the restaurant, Marsh and Barrel, only twice while we were there, there was wifi which was great, but it was busy. The food was nice, but nothing spectacular. What you’d expect from a Brewers Fayre type place. Nice, family friendly and comfortable. Just what you are looking for when eating with a young family, who might not always sit at peace and can be a little loud at times. We’ve all been there. A lot of the time we would go to the local supermarket, stock up and have our lunches and dinners back in the caravan. The kitchen is equipped with everything you’d need keep food in the fridge and freezer, cook in the oven, hob and microwave. There is lots of cupboard space and all your utensils, bowls, cutlery, etc. I would advise doing a supermarket shop at the start of your holiday, that way you have the option to eat in, eat out or have a picnic on the grounds or the beach.
Haven Haggerston Castle is an immaculate caravan site, with beautiful scenery, staff that are more than happy to help and lots to entertain both the young and old. There are lots of places to visit close by, including beautiful sandy beaches, Alnwick Castle and some fantastic farm parks. It’s a busy and popular park, so if there is an activity you particularly want to do, make sure you are there early or put your name down on the list. There are so many places to visit close by and going on day trips are a plenty. I cannot fault Haven on any of our holidays and I certainly can’t with this park. It has all you need for a wonderful family holiday and more.
Disclaimer:- We were given a caravan and pass for 5 days. All opinions are my own and we have been on many Haven holidays.
