Today I have the second in four extracts from the Book The Night Sky in My Head by Sarah Hammond, which is published with Oxford University Press. The first extract in case you missed it was on Readaraptor. The third extract is over on the lovely Serendipity Reviews on the 21st so don't forget to check it out.
Here is my extract:-
How do I watch the Backwards, Timmer? What happens?
1. I feel when the shed has a secret it wants to tell me. I just sit and wait for it, like I’m fishing and waiting for a fish. That’s what I did last night. I just sat on the sunlounger chair and waited.
I cut off some more fishing line and put it under the first bit. What next?
2. The world swirls and then it starts. The Backwards people come. They just do. That’s what happened last night until . . . until Dad came . . . until he chased the Backwards tramp away.
I frown. I don’t understand. How could Backwards- Dad chase the tramp away in a different bit of Backwards? More fishing line.
3. I see secrets. People come back to the same place and I see what they were up to: a real-life film just for me.
All these things are true. And I was the same as usual last night. I watched the tramp, didn’t I? And Mum? It was all right until Dad came—but, before last night, even if I went too far back by mistake, I only watched it.
I cut another bit of line and lay it down straight beneath the other ones.
4. I watch. I listen. But I don’t speak to them. Never. And they don’t speak to me. Until now.
What do you think? I think it's sounding excellent and cannot wait until publication day which is on the 5th July.
