Description:- In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is--she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are--and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series--dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.
Review:- I was in a bit of a book slump before I read this, nothing had kept my interest and made me thing wow this is good. However, when I read this I could not put it down. I was literally up until 3 in the morning reading this. Now with working full time and two little ones, that's not easy. This book kept me wanting more. I really did LOVE it. The book itself is rather large just shy of 500 pages and not once does it slow or make you lose your concentration from it. It is different from any other dystopians out there and didn't disappoint. When you pick this up, you are in for one roller coaster of a ride.
The main character is called Beatrice at the start, she lives in a society made up of five different factions, each faction has a different role in the society. Each factions lives separate lives but interact at times. At school they are taught by their factions. Once a year all the 16 years olds are given a test which determines which fraction they are destined to be part of. This doesn't necessarily mean it's the one they are born into. Beatrice's test doesn't go quite to plan. Once the test has been done, they have a big banquet where they choose the fraction they want to begin their lives with. This means leaving their families and fractions behind, should they choose a different path. Beatrice is undecided and selects Dauntless, who are the brave and reckless faction, leaving behind her selfless faction of Abnegation. Her brother chooses other faction also. She cannot look back once she leaves as Dauntless.
Beatrice changes her name to Tris, to try to reinvent herself for what she is about to face in the Dauntless initiations. 20 as initiates but not all will get in, some will become factionless and live a life on the outside.
Tris goes from the quite girl, who was selfless but always wanted to question things, she knew she didn't fit into Abnegation, but does she fit in in Dauntless. I have never seen a character change so much in any book, Tris becomes one kick ass girl. Tough as nails and more and more selfish, but in a good way. You have to be if you want to survive and you have to survive. Reading her journey as a Dauntless initiate was one nail biting read. You will not be able to stop, there are so many twists and turns.
Then there is her instructor, Four, he is tough, cold but a heart of gold. They begin to fall for each other. It is a lovely relationship to watch blossom, both equals and both strong. It's none of the usual girl falls head over heels and becomes her boyfriends lap dog type book. Tris stays true to herself and her mission of getting into Dauntless, whatever it takes. Their relationship was a natural progression and you were routing for them all the way.
Without spoiling the story, the twists and turns it takes with the other fractions and mind control are amazing, you really will be kept on the edge of your seat until the very last page. I had tears in my eyes towards the end, ones of sadness, happiness and relief. A real emotional journey will be had in this book. One you will not regret starting.
I loved Divergent one of the best dystopian novels and one of the best novels I have ever read. If you love an action packet book, with a fantastic kick ass heroine, then this book is for you. I cannot wait to read book two.
